Common Hair Myths Debunked

Many of us will do whatever it takes to have beautiful, healthy hair so I want to talk about the most common hair myths that I've heard and give you the facts:

“Coconut Oil/Argan Oil/Olive Oil/Mayo/Nutella is a miracle hair moisture mask”

These are not hair treatments!! Somewhere along the line, beauty corporations decided that oil and moisture mean the same thing , then everything went downhill from there.

Dry hair needs moisture, not oil.

Coconut Oil especially, will further dehydrate your hair by building up on the hair shaft and sealing out water. Hair is made up of keratin and if your hair is damaged from heat tools and chemicals and your keratin bonds are broken, coconut oil could make your hair worse!

Oils are sealants, not moisturisers.

Oils will seep into every tiny hole in your hair shaft and hide the real problem, they act as a short term quick fix but won’t help your hair in the long run. If you're looking for something that will make your hair sleek and shiny and feel nice, you should use a serum with good silicones in them, so they don’t build up on the hair and wash out easily. I recommend the new weightless conditioning oil by La Biosthetique.

“Sulfates = Bad”

Sulfates are very effective cleansers that have been used for years and aren’t bad for your hair! Personally, I cycle between sulfate free and sulfate shampoos based on whose hair I'm doing and what is being done. For people with hair that is extremely dry, have low oil production, or is very porous with little to no buildup present, a sulfate free shampoo is recommended

. For everyone else, you need to be using a sulfate shampoo at least once a week! I've had men come in to get their hair done with product buildup on their hair from wax because their partner has told them not to use sulfates, same with women that have come in with extremely limp hair that has ultra-buildup because they were afraid of sulfates. Not everyone's hair is the same, and this marketing of "X chemical is bad" has real bad consequences.

“Purple Shampoo doesn't work"

Purple Shampoo is used for, and only for, removing yellow from hair.

It is not used to remove Orange, Red, Brown, Green, Pink, or any other colour you could possibly have in your hair. If your hair is ORANGE you need BLUE shampoo. If your hair is RED you need GREEN shampoo. Purple shampoo will only remove yellow. Using it on anything else is a waste of time. Whilst we're at it, I recommend against using any purple/blue mask product without using a clarifying shampoo first. The reason coloured shampoos are so effective is because the high PH/surfactants of the shampoo lift the cuticle and increase the hair's porosity, allowing the colour to actually take to the hair. Those masks have very little colour relatively, and if applied to a closed cuticle, will further close it and basically do nothing.

If you do have some yellow to remove try the Glam Color .07 Shampoo by La Biosthetique.
